SUWAŁKI
is the youngest, but also the most densely populated town in
Suwałki Region. Until
quite recently it was the capital of the Suwałki Province. The
town was founded by the Wigry Cameldolite Order within their
vast properties. It was built near the Czarna Hańcza meanders,
where historical routes from Grodno to Królewiec and from the
Mazovia to Lithuania met. At first, about 1690, it was a little
settlement. As it was developing very fast, the Cameldolites
decided to convert it into a town. In 1710, King August II granted
them the privilege of holding markets and fairs. In 1715, the
monks freed the inhabitants from the villein service and marked
out the market square and building lots. The privilege of becoming
a town was granted by King August II in 1720. It was based on
the Magdeburg law and established markets, the fair, and the
coat of arms. After the third partition of Poland in 1795 Suwałki
Region came under Prussian rule. The new authorities confiscated
Cameldolite possessions and in 1800 the monks were made to leave
their monastery in Wigry. In this way Suwałki ceased to be a
monastic town. After the Congress of Vienna Suwałki was placed
within the borders of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1816 Suwałki
became the seat of the Augustów voivodeship, and later, after
1837 - the seat of the province. A historical value of Suwałki
is the town's layout preserved according to the plans from 1825.
It
was then that the big market place was transformed into a pleasure
garden, the cemetery was moved behind the Czarna Hańcza River,
a Jewish district with a new market square designed and new
streets marked out. An original element of the spatial plan
was to keep the presentable structure of the town - especially
buildings of public services - along the main street, which
was a natural part of the Kaunas road leading from Warsaw through
Kaunas to St. Petersburg. This street, now called Kościuszki
Street, is still the main artery of the town. It is nice to
walk here and admire classicist buildings situated along the
street. Both sacral and secular buildings of the old part of
the town represent classicist forms of architecture, characteristic
of the 19th century style. Their creators were well known, respected
architects such as Piotr Aigner, Antonio Corazzi, Henryk Marconi
and a Polish architect Karol Majerski.
Suwałki
- the former seat of the province and a county town now - is the
center of administration, industry, trade, culture, education and
tourism of Suwałki Region. The town possesses a well-equipped tourist
base for those who want to visit Wigry National Park, Suwałki Landscape
Park, Augustów Primeval Forest, the upper part of Biebrza National
Park as well as the neighbouring areas of Mazury Garbate with Romincka
and Borecka Primeval Forests, Ełk Lakeland and Great Mazury Lakes.
A well-developed bus and coach network joins Suwałki with other
big and small towns and almost all villages of Suwałki Region. Suwałki
also has a coach connection with Warsaw, Białystok, Gdańsk, Olsztyn
and Toruń. There is a coach connection with Lithuania (through the
border crossings in Ogrodniki and Budzisko), with Belarus (through
the border crossing in Kuˇnica Białostocka) and with the Russian
Kaliningrad District (through the Gołdap-Gusiew border crossing).
Moreover, a railway connection joins Lithuania with Białystok and
Warsaw via Suwałki.
